Higher Education

On Tuesday, February 14th 2017(Valentines Day) I was one of the many students that attend Higher Education Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol. At the State Capitol, I was able to speak to representatives and tell them why higher education is important to me. I am a first generation college student, and higher education has made an impact on my life. Before college... The  high school that I went to was a place where everyone knew each other, literally.  I was one of the few Mexicans that attended my high school and that was able to graduated. When I was looking for colleges to apply to, I looked for different things that each one offered. I was able to get a few scholarships for college because I had good grades, a high GPA, and was involved in many student clubs in high school. UCO... I attend the University of Central Oklahoma(UCO), located in Edmond, Oklahoma. I am currently in my second year of college. Attending UCO has been my best decision. ...

Interviewing Tips for College Students

Sometimes interviews do not go as you expect them to go. As someone that has been in multiple interview during my college career, whether it is for a job or to be on an executive position in an organization, I know that your first interview can be hard. There are different types of interviews. Phone, group, and individual interviews are just a few. This post will be about ways to improve you interviewing skills during an individual interview. This interview can include multiple interviewers and yourself. Or just one interviewer and yourself. Research... Make sure to research and look into the organization or company that you are applying for. You want to know as much about them as you can. If you know the name of the person interviewing you, look them up online and see what information you can find about them. Look for things that you have in common and could speak about during the interview. Plan... Come up with scenarios and questions that may be asked. You want to b...

A Commuters Tale

Image
Most college students live on campus during their first year of college. My life as a commuter... I am a student that has been commuting to my university for over a year now. What is a commuter? A commuter in college is someone that travels from their home to their school. The travel time can be from 15 minutes to 20 minutes, sometimes even longer. I commute from about 30 minutes to an hour. These past two semesters I have commuted Monday through Friday. Life can be hard for a commuter like me. I wake up at six in the morning to get ready for school. I leave my house at least an hour before I have my first class of the day. I usually get stuck in traffic and school zones. I might not get the best parking spot, but all of this is worth it. Pros of being a commuter... Living off campus may cost less. Not only will you have your own room to yourself, but you will also have more closet space. You will have a bathroom that you will not have to share with other people. You ...

Top 3 class Tips

My first semester of college was tough. I felt that I was not doing well in classes as I hoped I would. I was expecting things to be easy as they were in high school. Below are a few things that I realized I needed to do in order to get the grades that I wanted, and to actually learn. Be there... The biggest mistake that most students make is not going to class. How are you going to learn if you do not show up to class? Once you are in class, make sure to pay attention and actually listen to what your professor is saying. Connect... If there is something that you do not understand, ask questions. Participate in class. Most professors have office hours that you can go to for help if you still have any questions. Revise... Review any notes that you have taken. If you miss class, ask one of your classmates for their notes. Skim through your textbook. Make sure that the notes that you wrote and what you are reading makes sense. One last thing... Going to class is the most...

Timeless Meltdown?

Image
College students often struggle to try and balance their school work, jobs, sleep, and student life. As a student myself, I wanted to do as much as I could during my freshman year. I would use multiple planners to try and keep with all the dates and times. I was finding it hard to do everything I wanted to be involved on campus, and I realized that I needed to learn how to manage my time. Find the right planner... After looking and trying out different planners, I finally found a system that works for me. I use two different planners which I use for different purposes. Google Sheets... I decided to switch over, and start using Google Sheets in the spring of 2016. Through Google Sheets I have been able to create my own schedule and customize it to how I want it to look. I can color code my schedule into different categories such as, class time, studying time, my job, sleep, breaks, and the different organizations I am part of at school. One of my favorite things abo...
